The Linux Documentation Project has some good resources and justifications for using
the DocBook DTD as a standard format. I suggest that you read the LDP Author Guide:
http://linuxdoc.org/LDP/LDP-Author-Guide/

MSWord is IMO a poor choice of formats for this type of project.
