[NTLUG:Discuss] OT: sharing/splitting a Cat5 cable

Actually, it wouldn't take much to fashion such a device though I think
you'd have to do it in a way that is less aesthetic than your typical
modular phone splitter device.

As you must already know, there are four pairs in cat3/5 cables and only two
of which are used. So the other two could certainly be adapted for use as a
second ethernet drop.

On the hub side, you could simply feed the split wired to the ports. On the
other end, you would have to fit a double-female end to the split to allow
the eventual deviation of devices. Either that, or a dual wall plate could
be used to provide the female ends.

I don't know of any simple of cheap devices, but I do have the tools and the
ends available to me...(not that I'm volunteering; simply stating that they
are readily available and inexpensive supplies) A crimp tool, RJ45 ends and
possibly a punch-down tool for use with the wall-plate would be needed. It
should all be less than $100. Altex in Carrollton will have everything you
need.

I don't believe any simple or conventional devices you request exist....I've
never seen nor heard of any such things.

P.S. I need a job too...
