I stumbled across part of the answer to my earlier question.
Seems like I opened up the firewall with an "all" parameter net
to servers and everything started working again..... except for
Yahoo Messenger's voice chat, which I suspect is a udp problem
thru the firewall. The hack continues.... of course, this will open
a whole can of worms when I ever do get a dsl line and I want everything 
to keep working like it is now...... and have "security"....
