I had a similar problem on my gateway router/firewall here at home. The
problem seemed to clear up when I updated the driver (tulip) for the NICs
(Linksys). I can't remember what kernel version I was at at the time, but
it was definitely a 2.2 series, about 6 months ago (2.2.14 maybe?).
Anyway - I'd try starting there and not your firewall rules - since they
[w|sh]ouldn't be changing while the box is operational. A simple kernel
upgrade should do the trick as the appropriate driver(s) will get updated
along with it.
