I've had to do that no matter the MS OS. I had to install NT first on
my laptop and 98 first on my desktop at home. I think MS 9x/NT/2K just
wants to be first on the disk no matter what. Although NT has it's own
bootloader, I still haven't had any problems dual booting on my laptop.
When I boot my laptop, I get lilo first and if I select NT, it then
brings up the NT bootloader and everything is just fine. FWIW, I used
PartitionMagic to partition both my laptop and home PC.
