A "thank you" to all - you got me thinking, and trying stuff.  In the 
end I just said "no" to overwriting each of the various configuration 
files during the install process for XFree86 4.2.0, and everything works 
fine.
Thanks again for all your help in pointing me in the right direction.


Side note:  VMWare Workstation 3.0 supports Red Hat up to 7.1, and 3.1 
supports 7.2 as well.  However, 7.2 seems like it should have been 
called 8.0, and the combination of 7.2 and 3.1 don't seem to work as 
well as 7.1 and 3.0.  7.1 with 3.0 does seem to be an improvement over 
6.x with 2.x, though.  That's all kind of "gut feeling", and I'm still 
testing this, so I'll update you later.  3.0 claims to support 6.x, but 
I haven't any plans to try that at the moment.
