I recently went through the same thing with Sony re: XP vs. Win2K. 
Official answer was if you put any OS other than what we sell, you're on
your own.  I *did* manage to track down drivers for 99% of the stuff
that I was missing, and even managed to get most of the software that
installed with it working.

Thanks for letting me know I wasn't alone in experiencing miserable
support from sony.  Shame, as I really like the vaio line.
