[NTLUG:Discuss] Backup recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations on a backup configuration. Currently
I've got an external Zip hooked to an old Adaptec SCSI 2 ISA card.
Needless to say this isn't cutting it for system backups. For simple
daily backups this is fine but for complete machine backups I need
something with a little more punch.

Should I wait to select a tape device until I decide which backup
package I want to go with? I'm thinking of going with an internal tape
drive on this. Any thoughts on the internal vs external options?

Which PCI SCSI card would be the best choice? I intend to hang some
hard drives off this card in the future as well. Probably external
drives to eliminate the cooling problems associated with internals.

The box this will live in is a 650Mhz AMD Athlon (Slot A) with 256M and
an IDE primary drive. Mandrake 8.2 (new install after I get the SCSI
card).

Which package have people found easiest to deal with for single station
backups of networked machines?

Cost is a factor. I'd rather not spend more than $500 or $600 for the
entire package.

TIA,
