add the following to your ~/.xinitrc file:

gkrellm -geometry -0+0 &

and restart X.  you can fiddle with the geometry settings to have the 
item placed wherever you want it.  best thing to do would be to place 
the item where you want it, then open an xterm and issue xwininfo 
command, and click on the gkrellm monitor.  the last line of the results 
in your xterm will tell you the geometry numbers you want :)

*caveat:  if the last line in your .xinitrc file starts with "exec" then 
make sure you put your gkrellm command above it in the file.  the "exec" 
line should remain the last entry in the file after you edit it.

*caveat2:  if you use xdm/gdm/kdm then you want that line in your 
~/.xsession file instead.  i think.  /me shrugs.
