Perhaps this is a specific problem to the outdated distro you are using?
I su to root whenever I install packages on some of my remote machines,
and never have a problem. *shrug*

You'd be surprised, I think, on what exactly is considered painfully
elementary - every person on this list is at a different level, and it's
sometimes good to hear things repeated (read: I forget stuff if I
don't use that particular skill often).
So stay, and ask away!
