(warning.. you'll have to translate out the beers)
A: If you're windows partition is on another disk, then:
Linux will work better if you hard set this drive to something(anything)
smaller than actual, that the BIOS can handle. Linux doesn't use BIOS
information for disk access (on x86 anyway) after the kernal is loaded...
You'll need to fit LILO/grub and a /boot partition into the BIOS defined
size. With this setup, linux will run with any BIOS settings (any defined
drive) and still be able to see the whole drive.
Example, Define Your dive as a TYPE 17 (20meg drive on IBM drive list) when
you get to partitioning, make the first partition on this drive a /boot
partition and be sure to keep the size of /boot smaller than 20meg. Linux
should boot, any version of windows windows won't see any partition beyond
the limit you put in the BIOS.... This is an easy way to make your linux
system more secure from access while on windows.
B: If Windows is on the same disk:
ALL partitions that windows will access need to be inside the defined BIOS
settings.. This means you can't put windows on a logical partition and have
other logical partitions beyond the end of the bios settings.. This may work
for a while, but windows may someday decide that the FAT is screwed up and
fix it for you, deleting all the partitions beyond the end of the BIOS
definition. This means that both windows and linux have to fit in REAL
partitions OR Windows can't use any logical partitions OR you're stuck with
the BIOS limitation OR your beyond BIOS partitions may disappear without
warning.
