Another thing you can do in most distros is use the left ALT and the
right and left arrow keys to scroll through the consoles.  It only works
with the left alt in Mandrake and RedHat, I don't have any other ditros
handy to test.  That way you can switch back and forth easily, or flip
through all of them.  Whne I am working on tty1, I will use the
ALT-<LEFT-ARROW> to see the syslog screen on tty8, and them flip back. 
quick and easy.
