FYI - After thinking about the problem for a day or so, and reading all the
suggestions and comments, I started looking for exactly what was missing (or
broke). First thing I did was try other window managers, then just X, all with
the same result.... it tried to start, then crashed the xserver. I then tried
Xconfigurator, set the video resolution, then said "yes" I wanted X to start on
boot. Then I rebooted, and it worked. KDE2.1, that is. Not the so-called
upgrade.

All that effort for one damned little config file entry.
