There is one hiccup with the auto-installer, at least on my
(SuSE 8.0) machine. It fries the plugins directory.

To preserve it, tar it up, do the install to the same directory (under
SuSE 8, it's /opt/mozilla), tell it Y to get rid of the old stuff, and
then when it's done, untar the plugins back into place.  This will be
useful if you've got Acrobat Reader or Flash or (heaven forbid) the JRE
installed.
