Hello Fellow NTLUGers,
I too have for years been biased against HP, PB, and Compaq. Almost as much as I hate MicroS*it.
One quick little tidbit FYI. About 2 years ago, my brother was just about to throw out an old Compaq Prosignia VS server. 486 66mhz w/8MB Ram. For some unknown reason ( I at times tend to be a packrat) I stopped him.
I have been involved in Linux since about early '94 (I know, some have been around alot longer) and was starting to feel pretty good about myself. So I decided to make this old box a Linux project. I did some research, and decided to install the Linux Router Project and use it as a firewall/ router for my DSL connection.
The short of it is, after much headscrathing, cussing, fits of fits, and alot of reading, I finally got the thing to work. With the exception of the onboard NIC. ( AMD PCnet 32) it worked like a charm. It was booted up without error or reboot for 11 months, and the only reason for that reboot was the power-outage that struck south Irving last year.
I have since moved, there is no DSL or Cable service in this area ( isnt it 2002 ? ), so I am relegated to an old 56k connection. But the Compaq/ Linux box sits here, 3 feet away, waiting with the FrazierWall Linux floppy in the drive, for when I do get high-speed access again.
One last note, a freind on the internet sent me a driver he claims will work for the onboard NIC, so I now have a little more fun to look forward to as far as getting it to work again, but that is half the fun of Linux.
So I have learned that my biases may not all be appropriate, with the possible exception of my PB thing and I know I still hate MicoS*it.
