I see the following statement in my lilo man page:
Beginning with version 22.0, RAID installations write the
boot record to the RAID partition. Conditional writing of
MBRs may occur to aid in making the RAID set bootable in a
recovery situation, but all default actions may be over-
ridden. Action similar to previous versions is achieved
using the '-x mbr-only' switch.
In the "boot=" section of the lilo.conf man page:
A raid installation is initiated by specifying a RAID1 device
as the boot device; e.g., "boot=/dev/md0". Note that LILO
versions 22.0 and later operate differently from earlier versions
with respect to the actual location of the boot records.
So lilo does have some level of raid support, but it sounds like its
awareness is limitted to raid-1. Since I run raid-5 and I have a better
understanding of the old approach than the new approach (it seems like
you've got to have an mbr somewhere in order to get to the md boot record,
and I prefer to control where it goes), I prefer the old-fashioned way for
the time being.
