Fred,

If your running KDE you have the control center.  From there you can 
access the startup list and set the numlock on at bootup.

KDE (IIRC all shells) use the /etc/profile for system wide user init 
process.

I have a book (real paper and all) called "A Users Guide to X" that does 
a nice job of covering the X world.  LDP (http://www.tldp.org) has a "X 
Window System" section full of HowTos.
