Your problem may be similar to mine (don't know for sure - because I don't know what version of Xfree86 you have), Xfree86 version 4.1 and below don't have native support for the Geforce2 and better cards (I have a Geforce3).  You might try updating to XFree86 v4.2 (I haven't done it yet, but am going to soon) and it might take care of your problem. Just a thought (especially since I haven't done it, just researched why it happens.)
