Chris,
I recommend that you stick with rpm's until you're ready to tackle the
cross-dependency issues. The packagers do us a great service by working
these issues out for us. Rpm is your friend, and you should try to take
advantage of it. If you absolutely must have the very latest version of
something, I would start with the rpm .spec and try to roll my own rpm
(really not hard at all!)
RPM itself depends on BDB v.3 so I'm not surprised that had problems.
As a last resort, when using a source package, .tar.gz, file, make
sure your prefix is /usr/local and never touch anything in the "System
Area" (/etc, /usr, /lib...) of your installation.
