Have you tried Open Office 1.0.1 which just came out?  I installed it 
and was surprised that this time, it actually installed under 
/usr/local/OpenOffice.org1.0, and when each user runs setup, it only 
installs the components needed for each user in their home directory, 
but leaves the programs under the /usr/local/OpenOffice.org1.0 
directory.  So far, it Seems to work well for me.
