I'm not sure of a device, but a program that you might be interested in
to transfer files and read them is Plucker.

The URL is http://www.plkr.org I believe.

I use it to download and parse HTML files for viewing on my Sony Clie.
You should be able to have it parse text files and send those to your
handheld as well.
