[NTLUG:Discuss] MPG movies not playing

I use xmms and kmedia (KDE Media Player in the mandrake menu tree) in
mandrake 8.0

Both are listed under sound but have video plugins preinstalled by mandrake.
They will play .mpg files, but I wasn't successful getting them to play VCD
disks, or .AVI files. Kmedia is buggy with it's full screen support (as of
the mandrake 8.0 release anyway.) XMMS takes way too long to boot on my
system, so I only tried it once, but I did get it to play.
