I didn't explain it well.

And I did go ahead and verify that on 3 sets of duplicates.

That's what I *was* thinking, too. But the latest curve ball blows
that idea out the window: The sort and remove duplicates command works
properly if you tell it to ignore nonprintable characters (-i).

This thing is like a piece of gristle; the more you chew on it the
tougher it gets.
