only if you want your PC to boot and not be a
hot, paper weight. ;)
supposed to be one of the benefits of GRUB.
With Grub, if you install a kernel with the
same name, you don't have to do anything.
with Lilo, you have to run Lilo to record
the change the boot up stuff so you can boot.
If you don't... you see LI and nothing else
when you boot. Better have a boot floppy handy.
