The trouble with this part of these books is that they want to get you
started in on 'hello world' with the minimum of hassle. However, before
you can get that first program to run, they have to explain all about
compiling it - which is a nasty, ugly thing that *really* doesn't need
to be spelled out in full until you start to worry about programs that
are split over multiple files.
Hence they fudge a quick handwave-ish explanation to get it out of the
way so they can explain all of the important first-ever-program stuff.
