It was brought up previously a problem dealing with updates where you compile from tarball versus using an RPM, or other "prerolled" binary.
I was reading my Linux Journal for the current month (a periodical that every linux user should get - great stuff!) and noticed a tool that apparently has been around for awhile - called checkinstall (http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/index.php)
you use this app in place of 'make install' when you are done compiling. It builds an RPM (also includes support for slackware and debian) that is then installed (of course leaving the new RPM for you to use later. While I have only tried it with one tarball (nmap 3.0) it works great. I see a lot of checkinstall rpms being created in my future!
