Slightly different scenario - HP OfficeJet d155xi
RH Linux 7.2

I found that using the "Deskjet 1600C, cdj1600" driver was one of the 
better choices for printing.

What I did was run though the list of HP inkjet printer/driver 
combinations offered in the "printconf-gui" until I found some that 
worked, and then I compared results (speed, clarity, etc.) and picked on 
of the better ones.
