I've been running sane-1.0.1 and with that release, you just do the
usual "./configure ; make install" and then specify the type of
device you have when you tell it which port to access:

eg
         scanimage -d umax:/dev/scanner -h

(The 'xscanimage' program pops up a dialog box to ask which scanner you
want to use).

For SCSI scanners there is a program called 'find-scanner' that searches
the SCSI bus for any scanners and lists them out for you. Dunno how that
would work out with any of these 'fake' SCSI bus things like ppscsi though.

I find I have to 'chmod a+rw /dev/scanner' or run these programs as root
or they don't detect the scanner.

There are some other hints on how to make sure you are getting the right
drivers in the README file that's in the SANE distro tarball.

AFAIK, all supported scanner drivers are indeed distributed with SANE.
