[NTLUG:Discuss] glibc 2.0 -> 2.1 upgrade

Had anybody successfully upgraded a Linux installation from glibc 2.0.x to 2.1.x?
It's obvious to me there are some incompatibilities with binaries compiled for
2.0.x. As a test, I installed the 2.1 libs in a separate dir, then had the existing
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 link point to the new ld-linux lib. About half of the utilities
I tested worked; the other have failed miserably with many undefined symbol errors.
What would be nice is if I could simply keep the 2.1 libs available to run
precompiled binaries against when necessary. The problem here is that if I set
LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to the new libs, then there's some utility somewhere that
will fail. Not only that, but the existing ld-linux loader is incompatible with the
2.1 libs.
Of course, I could always install a new distro :) But I've become quite attached to
the very bastardized/customized installation I now run under...
