Because that would require purchase of equipment I don't already
have -- that is, an ISDN modem. The Pipeline's purpose is to route
packets to the Internet over a 64K ISDN connection. I've used
them before; it's plenty fast for the purpose.

The Linux box's function will be to route packets between the 10
and 100 networks. It's functionality that already exists and doesn't
require the purchase of additional equipment beyond what I've
already acquired.

A 10/100 switch the size I want (16 ports or greater) is wildly
expensive for my budget, especially from a manufacturer I'm willing
to use. I know people have had good luck with SMC and Dlink
products; I have not, and have found that you get what you pay for.
That's why I'm basically an all 3COM house. The speed and
reliability are worth the extra money it costs me.
