With mandrake 8.0, I installed my CD-burner.. ran into the brick wall of
missing information in the config dialogs just like you did... and went back
to windows for 6 months...
The second time I got interested in burning in linux, I found a 'SCAN BUS'
button in gnome toaster ( rpm is included in the download version of 8.1
also. ) Pressing this button (while logged in as root) solved all my
problems. The values needed filled themselves in. No more issues. Stuff
burns a lot faster than in windows (gtoaster keeps the buffer full even thru
the end/beginning of each track, where all my windows programs complete
burning each track before they start loading the buffer for the next.)
Gnome toaster runs fine in KDE or any x desktop.
I didn't have my burner installed during installation, and I answered "NO" to
the question: do you have any SCSI devices? I never thought about installing
a module in the kernal, it just worked once I told it to scan the bus for
devices. Gnome Toaster must handle the SCSI level communication without
specifically setting it up as a kernal module, or it the module must get
installed realtime when its needed.
I've successfully given permission for my user account to write to the device
that the burner is on (chmod /dev/____ 666 ) ... but Mandrake security sees
fit to undo those permissions for me when it runs nightly. Instead of fight
that battle, I just su to root when I need to burn something. running
gtoaster from command line (a terminal window) gives you a little more
information when you get a bad burn.. some errors dump to the terminal
instead of the log...
Topical guidelines to make gnome toaster work:
1. install the gnome toaster rpm
2. su to root in a terminal window
3. run #gtoaster
4. choose edit -> preferences on the menu
5. go to the CD recorder setup page
6. at the bottom is the 'SCAN BUS' button
7. burn something
Note: you can drag multiple files by first selecting them with shift/ctrl
mouse schemes, then dragging with the right mouse button.. took me forever to
figure that out.
Good luck
