No heat Fred.  First thing I checked too.

Yes, volume is turned up.  And, based on a suggestion from another list, I 
have opened up the mixer and made sure that none of the channels had their 
volume turned way down or were muted.  Everything looked okay there.

Now, I'm going to ask a stupid question.  The speakers themselves shouldn't 
matter a hill of beans, should they?  I mean, once the OS gets the sound to 
the sound card, that's all that should matter, right?  Just trying to 
positively rule out that a powered sub-woofer (sub plugs into sound card, 
speakers plug into sub) would not be causing the problem.
