Yes you guess was correct.
It stores the user mail account in the users home directory.

Anyone know where Slackware puts the user mail box? I looked in
/var/spool/mail/, but there is only the root mail box. Oh wait, maybe
Slack does not automatically create a user mail account when a user
account is created.... mmmm well, I welcome any comments on this,
