well, I removed all but wins from the hosts: line in /etc/nsswitch.conf and 
I get instant resolution failure!  All ping by names are immediately 
cancelled with an unknown host message.  I added in files....and was able to 
ping the entries in the files.  I added in dns and can now resolve through 
dns. 

nmblookup is working WELL on the network..but SMBCLIENT still refuses to 
work correctly!  UG! 

I've posted a help request on linux.samba a while back but I have yet to 
receive an answer.  I'm going to go looking for a developer's mailing list 
somewhere. (I hope one exists) 

Any clues?
