Well many of the USB drives do work 'out-of-the-box' with new kernels. 
I have had no issues with the one I had (just one of the little 128M
keychain things) and have no issues with the USB Sony cameras I have. 
They just work with no issues or tinkering.  Just plug them in, mount
the drive and go.
