I would like to help with this one, but it is really one for the
dpkg/apt programmers. File a bug on bugs.debian.org

Did you use the upgrade mechanism described in the release notes? 
(It may involve installing apt and dpkg first, then doing the upgrade if
you are hoping a couple of releases)

Also, do you have a swapfile or a swap partition? How big is it?
