Try the tip found here:

http://www.mozilla.org/start/1.0/faq/browser.html#2.10

If that doesn't help do the following:

Edit -> Preferences -> Images -> "Do Not Load Any Images"

Both of the above should work in Mozilla 1.0.1.  If fact, I just tried
editting the preferences in my Moz 1.0.1 and it worked.
