[NTLUG:Discuss] disk space

I used du -sh *  to check my disk space.    It tells me that I have 
5.4 gig in my home directory.   I did du in the home dir and I don't see 
5.4.   Only 1.8.   I want to clean out my disk space but i can't find the files.   What am I doing wrong.
