I don't know what Chris does but this is what I do for
multiple boot systems:
1. Always load Windows on the first partiton of the
hard-drive. I always install Windows first so that
this becomes a non-issue. I also avoid NTFS whenever
possible because Linux can't use it very well.
2. Use Partition Magic to resize your C partition and
create extended partitions or other primary
partitions.
3. Create your linux partitions and install Linux.
4. If you used fat32 for Windows and ext2 or ext3
filesystems for Linux you can use Boot Magic to boot
Linux (with lilo installed on / partition) and
Windows. But if you use NTFS or XFS filesystems, you
will have to use Lilo, Grub or NT loader installed in
MBR to boot your OSes. Mandrake 9.0 installs with XFS
filesystem and Grub and will autodetect Win2K or XP
which is probably the easiest and quickest boot loader
configuration and installation. If the distribution
you use doesn't auto detect Windows and configure then
you can expect that you will have configure Lilo or
Grub (or NT Loader) yourself.
5. To backup and restore Windows with the least amount
of problems/configuration you should use Ghost. Ghost
can restore Windows without overwriting the MBR by
just restoring the image to the C partition. You can
use the Windows install disk to install, but you will
need a Linux rescue boot disk to restore the system to
dual boot. With this method you will have to
reconfigure your boot mananger (NT Loader, Grub, Lilo
or Boot Magic)to boot both OSes...in the meantime
Linux will still be there but you won't be able to
boot to it without the rescue boot disk you created
when you first installed Linux.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Bryn
