[NTLUG:Discuss] gtk-gnutella and zlib

I'm trying to install the newest version of gtk-gnutella and have run into a problem.
./configure says: checking for zlib.h,not found please install zlib
rpm -qa|grep zlib shows it to be installed
find / -name zlib.h shows it to be in /usr/include
$PATH shows /usr/include in my path
any suggestions?
