A word of warning.   I've been compiling my own kernels since '94 (hundreds
of times now, probably) so I jumped into RH 8.0 expecting the same easy
method.  Even following RedHat's own kernel compile instructions with their
rpm's, I could not even get it to compile.   Giving up on that,  I
downloaded the official kernel and compiled that, but it wouldn't even boot
(failing to mount filesystems - and , yes, I had correctly configured those
settings in my make xconfig. )

So for now, I am still at a loss as to what's going on.   Hope it's just
something silly, like RH8 disabling dma on CD/DVD's.
