There is another reason. Suppose you have a program run amok and
start allocating memory like crazy. If you have lots of swap space,
it'll eat all of physical memory and then cause the system to start
swapping - that grinds the machine to a virtual standstill - which
can make it difficult to kill the errant process. If you have no
swap, the program will soon fail to allocate memory and will crash.
Stuff a gig of RAM in your machine - if you need more than that
then something's broken and it might as well die sooner rather
than later.
