Bummer, try memtest (or is it mem86test?), I think that's the name.  It may 
just be a bad memory stick.  My machine (suse) has that as a boot option.  If 
yours doesn't, you'll have to create a boot floppy with it on it and boot into 
that.  It's very easy to use.  Of course you'll need about 6 hours or so of 
downtime... :-)
