For about $20 (I thnk) you can get a converter and use the laptop drive
as a standard IDE in your desktop.  It is just a plug size converter
with power added.  I have one I use for things such as this and had it
for years.  Though you can not use it as a secondary drive, it has to be
by itself.

There are also cases that allow you to access them through USB, but not
sure the cost.  Makes a great portable drive with the USB and works
great with Linux,to make sure we are actually on topic ;).  The one I
have already had a drive in it, but they make just the cases, I think.
