[NTLUG:Discuss] Re: Periodic crashes on Redhat 8.0

I downloaded memtest86 and checked out my memory. No
problems reported. So it has to be something else.
The machine has a single HD and a NIC; everything else
(sound, video) is built-in, and I am not running RAID.
I can't think that it could be the hard drive. I was
in the middle of reading a log file when the machine
just died. If it was the hard drive there would have
been other signs, maybe some beeping or something.

I thought that it might have been the power suppy, but
it seems to boot up every time. I have little
experience with power suppy failures, but is it common
for it just to fail after a while. Plus the machine
still has some power after it crashes. I can eject
the CDROM. If it is the power suppy, it must be with
just the ATX cable. I have noticed that the uptime
seems to be shrinking down to an hour.

Thanks for all your help.

Minh

I think your the power supply in that machine might be
poopy. Have you tried swapping out a spare PS and
seeing if that doesn't fix the problem? If the PS
doesn't fix the problem it might be a flaky hard
drive...I've seen them get odd failures like that just
before they're ready for the crapper. Also, do you
have hardware or software raid implemented on this
machine??

Cheers,

Bryn
