Go to http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/ and type 'libast.so.1' in the 
search engine and you'll see that: 'LibAST is the Library of Assorted 
Spiffy Things ' but there are not RPM builds yet for RH 8.9. You can do 
one of two things --
1) Download an RPM for a different i386 distro (like mandrake) and try 
installing that. There's also RPMs of the CVS build as well if you'd 
like to try that. Or....
2) Get the source for the library (from http://www.eterm.org) and build 
it by hand.
