just my 2 cents ( and I want to test out sending mail from my
web mail client ).....

AT&T is big. They may block port 80 in some locations and
not others. There is on 'CETRAL' office where everyone gets
the same stuff. You get what you get from your local AT&T
office.

this will only work if you are testing someting other
than yourself. In this case, he wants to see if access
to his server is blocked from the outside world by AT&T.
telneting on the local server to the local port 80 uses
the loop back device and never hits the AT&T network.
