Just a guess here.

How long after you changed the A record did it finally appear to the 
outside?  Do you control the DNS or did you submit a change request of 
some sort?  When the A record was changed is it possible that the serial 
number was not changed?

Is it possible that the DNS was not reloaded or not updated in a 
reasonable period so the new IP was not broadcast for awhile?
