I had this problem in the past and I had to disable the arts sound server
which did NOT disable sounds in return as I figured it would.   This was
under the KDE Windows System.  In Gnome it works fine without disabling
anything.

I installed realplayer the other day and i get this error when starting
"Cannot open the audio device.Another application may be using it"
Mplayer,Xawtv,xmms,and kde media player all work perfectly,and i even get a 
start-up sound when i log in.No other program is using sound when i start 
realplayer.
