You need to look at the modules rather than your /dev files.  
i.e.: /lib/modules/2.x.y...

uname -a should show what kernel you are running.

Have you tried /etc/rc.d/init.d/sound start?  What does that give you?

also, do an lsmod and see what modules are loaded.  Especially look for
your sound card driver, the mixer, etc.

Are you using OSS or ALSA?
